Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding

between ASEAN and FIFA

On 2 November 2019, H.E. Dato’ Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary-General of ASEAN, and Mr. Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ASEAN and FIFA in the presence of all ASEAN Leaders. The MOU outlines cooperation in four main areas as follows: (1) Sports integrity; (2) Sports for development; (3) FIFA’s Football for Schools Programme; and (4) Professional capacity building. These areas of cooperation are in line with the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2016 – 2020 and FIFA 2.0: The Vision for the Future.

The President of FIFA reiterated FIFA’s readiness to work closely with ASEAN and took the opportunity to present football jerseys to each ASEAN Leader, bearing the Leader’s name and a designated number. Number 10 was presented to Heads of State and Presidents while Heads of Government received a jersey with the number 9. The jersey for the President of Indonesia was specifically printed with number 21 as Indonesia will host the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

At the 34th ASEAN Summit in June 2019, ASEAN Leaders supported Thailand’s proposal for ASEAN to develop a joint bid to host a FIFA World Cup. Earlier last month, the Fifth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-5) on 7-9 October 2019 in Manila, Philippines, agreed to establish a Technical Working Group led by Thailand to prepare for ASEAN’s joint bid for the FIFA World Cup in 2034.
